My dog was called Bertie and he was such fun
But boy could he just run and run;
I would have to ride my bike you see
He was like a bullet from a gun.

I thought he was very quiet today
But now I know he wasn't well;
He looked at me with tired eyes
As his chest really started to swell.

The vet said there was nothing he could do
We're all now so very, very sad;
There's an emptiness and it's eerie
I feel like I've lost my comrade.

He's been with me most of my life
Part of my daily routine;
To talk to and walk with wherever I went
I'd always kept him so pristine.

So bye bye Bertie
I love you so much;
Be good in heaven and
In my dreams keep in touch!

Sunlight streams through window pane
onto a spot on the floor...
then I remember,it's where you used to lie,
but now you are no more.

Our feet walk down a hall of carpet
and muted echoes sound....
then I remember,
It's where your paws would joyously abound

A voice is heard along the road,
and up beyond the hill
then I remember it can't be yours....
your golden voice is still.

But I'll take that vacant spot of floor
and empty muted hall
and lay them with the absent voice
and unused dish along the wall

I'll wrap these treasured memorials
in a blanket of my love
and keep them for my best friend
until we meet above.

I can't believe that you're not here
That you have gone for good;
I miss you more than I can bear
By my side always and now you never would.

I held your paw within my hands
We only had to look;
Into each other's eyes once more
A few tears was all it took.

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.

You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.

We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes,
please, let me go.

Take me where, to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.

Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

We've grown older together
But my years go fast;
So now is that time
That we must part at last.

You've been a good master
And a very good friend;
You've loved me to bits
Right down to the end.

So walk with me please
Just this one last time;
As I go down this heavenly path
I've been your friend, you will always be mine!

You've chucked me in the sea
Covered me in mud;
Then moaned when we got back home
And covered me in suds.

I've tried to hint to chuck a ball
But you just don't understand;
I should've taught you doggie talk
As we walked across the land.

But never mind it's to late now
I've got to go right now;
I'm sorry I've not been long
But I've enjoyed you anyhow.

My doggie pals have always said
He's pretty good you know;
He could've dressed you up in pink
And put you in a show!
